I was born in Bengkulu 18 years ago. I’ve attended the Tabot Ceremony once, I was about 5 years old. I did not understand what I saw. Until one day Dailypost : culture challenge appeared this week.
I’m a little curious about what Tabot is and decided to ask to my parents (they were also the Bengkulu people). Here it is a summary that I got from various sources (I hope you understand my messy English) hehe
Tabot is a traditional ceremony to commemorate the Bengkulu people about the story of heroism and death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib in the battle with the forces Ubaidullah bin Zaid in the desert of Karbala, Iraq on the 10th of Muharram 61 Hijri (681 AD).
Celebration in Bengkulu were first carried out by Sheikh Burhanuddin Senggolo known as Imam in 1685. Tabot term derived from the Arabic word” Ark” which literally means “wooden box” or “chest”.
In the Qur’an the word Tabot known as a chest containing the Book Taurat. Bani Israel in those days believed that they would get the good when it appeared Tabot and is in the hands of their leaders. Instead they will get a disaster when it was gone.

There is no written record since when Tabot ceremony began to be known in Bengkulu.
