Tabot, Bengkulu

I was born in Bengkulu 18 years ago. I’ve attended the Tabot Ceremony once, I was about 5 years old. I did not understand what I saw. Until one day Dailypost : culture challenge appeared this week.
I’m a little curious about what Tabot is and decided to ask to my parents (they were also the Bengkulu people). Here it is a summary that I got from various sources (I hope you understand my messy English) hehe

Tabot is a traditional ceremony to commemorate the Bengkulu people about the story of heroism and death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib in the battle with the forces Ubaidullah bin Zaid in the desert of Karbala, Iraq on the 10th of Muharram 61 Hijri (681 AD).
Celebration in Bengkulu were first carried out by Sheikh Burhanuddin Senggolo known as Imam in 1685. Sheikh Burhanuddin (Imam Senggo) married Bengkulu women then their children, their grandchildren and their descendants called Tabot family. ceremony was conducted from 1 to 10 Muharram (Islamic calendar based) every year.

Meaning Tabot
At first the core of the ceremony is to commemorate the efforts Tabot Shi’ite leader and his people collecting body parts Hussein, parading and burying in Padang Karbala.
Tabot term derived from the Arabic word” Ark” which literally means “wooden box” or “chest”.

In the Qur’an the word Tabot known as a chest containing the Book Taurat. Bani Israel in those days believed that they would get the good when it appeared Tabot and is in the hands of their leaders. Instead they will get a disaster when it was gone.

Sign in to Bengkulu
There is no written record since when Tabot ceremony began to be known in Bengkulu. However, allegedly departed from tradition ceremony mourning the adherents of Shi’ism was taken by the craftsman who built Fort Marlborought (1718-1719) in Bengkulu. The construction workers, brought in by the British of Madras and Bengali in the southern part of India which happens to be the adherents of Shia Islam.

The workers who feel comfortable with the people tatahidup Bengkulu, led by Imam Senggolo alias Sheikh Burhanuddin, decided to stay and set up a new settlement called” file”, now known as Central Village Padang. Tradition brought from Madras and Bengali bequeathed to their descendants who have been assimilated into the native people of Bengkulu and produce offspring, known as the” people” Sipai.

Mourning traditions brought from their home country is experiencing assimilation and acculturation with the local culture, and then inherited and institutionalized into what became known as the” ceremony” Tabot. Tabot ceremony is more widespread than Painan Bengkulu to Padang, Pariaman, Maninjau, Pidie, Banda Aceh, Meuleboh and Singkil. But in its development, Tabot activity disappeared in many places. Until in the end only found in two places, namely in Bengkulu with Tabot” name” and in Pariaman Sumatra (in about 1831) with the title” Tabuik”. Both are the same, but the implementation is somewhat different ways.

If at first ceremony Tabot (Tabuik) is used by the Shia to commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, then since Sipai people escape the influence of Shi’ism, the ceremony is performed only as a family obligation to fulfill the testament of their ancestors. Later, since the last decade, in addition to carrying out the ancestors wills, the ceremony was also intended as a form of participation of the people in the coaching and development Sipai Bengkulu area local culture.

Social and cultural conditions, it seems, is also the cause of the ordinance implementing perberbedaan Tabot ceremony. In Bengkulu, for example, Tabotnya totaling 17 which shows the number of families who carry out initial Tabot, while the in Pariaman only consists of 2 kinds Tabot (Tabuik) ie Tabuik Subarang”” and”” Tabuik Pasa. Tabot landfills (Tabuik) between Bengkulu and Pariaman also different. At first Tabot in Bengkulu in waste into the sea as in West Sumatra Pariaman. However, in its development, Tabot in Bengkulu dumped in a swamp located around the cemetery known as the tomb is believed to be the place Karbela dimakamnya Senggolo aka Imam Shaykh Burhanuddin.

Lately, a lot of criticism from the public on the implementation of the various elements of the ceremony Tabot. One of the most fundamental of all these criticisms is the changing function of ritual ceremony Tabot religious nuances become a mere cultural festival. This appears to be due to the fact that the ceremony Tabot is the non-Shia. Loss values sakralitas ceremony Tabot further exacerbated by the emergence of what became known as the” development” Tabot (Tabot whose existence as programmed by the government and amounted to much).

Many of the values of wisdom that can be extracted and used as a foundation for life, but if not addressed wisely, then Tabot ceremony will be a cultural festival that is essentially lost its meaning. Festive in the implementation of (the festival) but lost the spirits.
